OK, since the Stars got bumped from the NHL playoffs by Detroit, I've been bombarded with text messages asking what to expect from the offseason in Dallas. OK, I really only got one ... from Steve. *cough* ... Nevertheless, demand seems to be at an all-time high at one, so listen to our Dallas Stars podcast for the sound of my voice, and read on for my specific analysis. The biggest decision facing the Stars is certainly what to do with Mattias Norstrom. First of all, the fact that he is their biggest decision is a good thing. Dallas will go in to the season without a lot of turnover. Not that that's a surprise after the kind of year they had. Norstrom is old. The biggest knock on him is his contract - over $4 million a year. But he is a solid, physical defender who brings great leadership as the former captain of the Kings. Even though you have the three rookie defensemen and Sergi Zubov, Philippe Boucher and Trevor Daley to fill out the defense, the team can always use a steady seventh or eighth option. I say resign him at a more cost-effective price. Some where in the area of $1.5 million. But one thing I'd like to see Dallas is find a two-way winger for Mike Modano. That was suppose to be the focus at the trade deadline this year. Instead, Brett Hull and Les Jackson traded for Modano's replacement as the No. 1 center - Brad Richards. That turned out to be a pretty good move, but still. Modano has enough talent with the puck that the team needs to find someone who can score goals next to him. Modano has assumed the checking line center role, so the Stars need a guy that can play defense, too. No looming free agents really fit that bill, although Kristian Huselius, Brendan Shanahan and Ryan Malone are among the sexy, unrealistic choices. I say trade to bring back Jamie Langenbrunner, but I've been saying that since he was traded. The Stars have minor decisions to make as far as who they want to be their enforcer and how much to resign Antti Miettinen and Loui Erickson for. I think both will be resigned, but Niklas Hagman may be on the outside looking in. The Stars also need to decide who to be their No. 2 goalie with Johan Holmqvist being a free agent. |

I don't know what I'm supposed to say here. I don't have any idea. If you were me sitting here, tell me, what would you say?
